Tajik trainees complete remote sensing training course at GAF

August 2, 2022

4-Week GAF training course successfully completed

GAF AG has successfully provided a training course on Remote Sensing and GIS as part of the GIZ-funded project “Technology-based Adaptation to Climate Change in Rural Areas (TCCA-RA) of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan”. Three experts from the Design and Research Institute (FAZO) in Dushanbe, Tajikistan were trained from 16 June to 15 July 2022 at GAF’s headquarters in Munich as well as at the branch office in Neustrelitz. During this training course, the participants were introduced to operational production processes and projects that GAF is implementing in connection with climate-related mitigation and adaptation measures in various sectors.

The 4-week training course was a follow-up to the previous basic and advanced courses conducted by GAF experts up until the end of last year at the Design and Research Institute FAZO in Dushanbe. As part of the Photogrammetry Department of FAZO, an Earth Observation Laboratory (EOL) with six workplaces was established at the beginning of the project in early 2021. The hardware and software components installed for the EOL were tailored to meet the needs and requirements of Fazo’s future application sectors.

The project, which is part of the overall programme “Technology-based Adaptation to Climate Change in Rural Areas (TCCA-RA) of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan”, aims to empower the trained operators to produce the geospatial data required for evidence-based planning in the operational EOL. This includes capacity building in remote sensing and GIS applications for climate-related impact assessments and environmental planning in Tajikistan, as well as the management of an operational EOL.

The overall training programme has been tailored to the needs of the EOL-team and includes technical as well as practical components. Topics related to climate change in Tajikistan have been identified and workshops on appropriate remote sensing applications have been held. The project will conclude by the end of 2022 with a final workshop in the premises of FAZO in Dushanbe.
