GAF takes part in the European Space Week Online Event from 7-11 December 2020, organised by the European Commission and the European Global Satellite Systems Agency, GSA. We are especially glad to present our GAF-projects and EU Horizon 2020-milestones: ECoLaSS and EOMonDis at one of GSA’s sessions, which will demonstrate H2020 success stories on: Friday 11 Dec.; H2020 projects – success stories; 9:00-10:00 am.
The Horizon 2020 project EOMonDis Project (Bringing Earth Observation Services for Monitoring Dynamic Forest Disturbances to the Users) aims to offer operational Earth Observation (EO) based tropical forest monitoring services to support countries and a wide range of users with accurate relevant forest information data for their management and reporting requirements. The project was embedded in the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme for Research and Innovation of the European Union.
The overarching goal of EOMonDis was to develop innovative and cost-effective EO-based methods to address the technical challenges for satellite based tropical forest monitoring. The developed methods fully utilize the comprehensive information provided by the dense time series of optical and SAR satellite data of the Copernicus missions Sentinel-1 and 2. The methods developed were tested on study sites selected to represent the wide range of variety in the tropical biomes, in Malawi, Cameroon, Gabon and Peru. Users from these countries were consulted for consolidation of the service requirements, validation of the services, the customization and improvement of the services to fit into their workflows.

The Horizon 2020 project ECoLaSS “Evolution of Copernicus Land Services based on Sentinel data” aimed at developing and prototypically demonstrating innovative methods, algorithms and prototypes for future operational Copernicus Land Monitoring Service components from 2020 onwards, for pan-European and global scales. ECoLaSS made full use of dense time series of optical (Sentinel-2) and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite observations (Sentinel-1). The developed prototype products were rigorously tested, quality-controlled and benchmarked. Finally, the most operationally mature prototypes were selected and recommended to the European Commission and relevant Copernicus decision-makers as candidates for operational integration into the future Copernicus Land Monitoring Service from 2020 onwards. The project has been continuously taking into account rapidly evolving scientific and technological developments, as well as a broad range of user and stakeholder requirements. Several of the ECoLaSS prototypes have meanwhile become state of the art, and are already, or very soon to become, part of the operational Copernicus service family.
