Project Manager Earth Observation & Copernicus LCLU downstream Services

To further strengthen our team in the field of Earth Observation & Copernicus Land Cover and Land Use (LCLU) downstream Services at our headquarters in Munich, we are looking for a

Project Manager Earth Observation & Copernicus LCLU downstream Services

You will be part of an international team of experts, that is responsible for the implementation of a wide range of projects in the fields of land monitoring, land cover and land use as well as topographic mapping. Many of our projects are embedded in the Copernicus programme.

Your tasks:

  • Coordination of projects and implementation of project tasks in the Earth Observation / Copernicus domain, in close cooperation with international partner companies/institutions and the customer(s)
  • Managing a team of thematic experts and project partners from various domains (LCLU mapping, satellite data, image processing, software development, AI/ML data science etc.) in compliance with the project work plan, schedule, quality standards and budget
  • Managing and monitoring the project budget and deployed resources
  • Acting as the main interface for organisational and reporting aspects with the customer related to project implementation, ensuring that both customer needs and project team requirements are well understood and implemented in a balanced way
  • Coordinating information flows with supporting units (such as business development, technical development, contractual/legal, financial, ICT), and ensuring seamless collaboration between all project tasks, work packages and team members
  • Identifying risks, issues and deviations, and suggesting and coordinating the respective mitigation actions
  • Managing and coordinating the project progress reporting, documentation, and technical deliverables, and presenting project results to the customer and to international audiences (e.g. at conferences, symposia)
  • Support in new acquisition of upcoming Earth Observation / Copernicus opportunities

Core requirements - there is no way around it:

  • Educational background: MSc. degree (or equivalent) in geography, GIS, remote sensing, or similar or proven expertise in the related field
  • Minimum 5 years relevant working experience:
    • Proven track experience in remote sensing, digital image processing /interpretation, GIS applications and land cover/land use mapping
    • Experience in project management and task coordination
    • Expertise in team management and coordination
  • Knowledge on financial and effort management
  • Fluency in English (at least level C1 according to the CEFR)
  • Knowledge of the Copernicus Land Monitoring Service and other Copernicus downstream services
  • Good writing skills and oral and technical communication proficiency
  • Analytical and solution-oriented mindset
  • Self-motivated and independent, but also with a collaborative working style that creates a highly-integrated team environment
  • Ready to travel, also to international destinations

Desirable and advantageous, but not a prerequisite:

  • Good command of at least one additional language (German, French, Spanish)
  • Relevant experience in Copernicus Land Monitoring Service or any other Copernicus service
  • Working experience with other European and international entities such as ESA, EC, IFI’s e.g. World Bank
  • Experience in EO-based product validation / thematic accuracy assessment / geo-statistics
  • Experience in project acquisition and supporting proposal management (proposal writing and management, consortium building
